Overall job purpose

To contribute to the provision of high quality passenger transport for service users by driving vehicles, maintaining records relating to such services, handling cash as required and contributing to the efficient operation of Community Transport. To escort and provide assistance to service users to ensure their comfort and safety during journeys.

  • As part of the Community Transport Team, you will provide a high quality passenger transport service to clients referred by Social Services and the Transportation Section.
  • You will have direct responsibility for driving a minibus or other vehicle transporting clients. You will ensure the daily walk around safety check of the vehicle is carried out prior to using on the day.
  • You will be directly responsible for the clients who will be in your care, from leaving their residence, until handover at their destination. You will ensure their comfort and safety until they arrive at their destination, and during their return journey to their residence, by driving in a safe and professional manner.
  • You will be directly responsible for ensuring clients are secured safely in their seats or wheelchairs, and also be directly responsible for ensuring wheelchairs are clamped securely in line with current procedures and regulations, giving consideration to the type and size of wheelchair, and physical restraint needs of the clients.

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Driving a wheelchair accessible minibus safely in accordance with the rules of the Highway Code.
  • Undertake the daily walkaround safety check of the vehicle prior to using on the day and report any issues to your line manager or the Fleet Garage
  • Ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of service users in accordance with procedures and regulations.
  • Be familiar with the practical and procedural techniques of clamping various different types of wheelchairs complying with current regulations. Giving consideration to the size of the wheelchair, use of belt extensions, and physical requirements of the clients. Thus, ensuring all services users wear their safety belt and all wheelchairs and walking aids are securely fastened.
  • Awareness of the medical and physical needs of the clients. The needs of different clients may be specific to individuals, examples include: correct action to take in the event of an epileptic fit, specific to that client, if a client falls or slides in their wheelchair, correct procedure to assist or lift the client specific to any physical or medical conditions.
  • Use your initiative to identify and interpret any changes in client behaviour (physical or mental) and immediately report any concerns to the MCT Team Leader or Day Centre staff.
  • Responsibility for assisting service users on and off the vehicle safely. Regularly using a tail lift, ramp and winch.
  • Responsibility for supervising and monitoring clients at pick up and drop off points, and any unscheduled stops such as vehicle breakdown. Some service users will attempt to undo their seatbelts or have behavioural issues which you will need to control. You will need to be observant and alert.
  • You will develop and maintain a friendly rapport with the service users enabling you to ease any worries they may have if they are distressed in any way when under your care.
  • In the event of a vehicle breakdown, you will be responsible for the safe transfer of clients to any replacement transport.
  • Report all incidents involving service users immediately to the MCT Team Leader especially incidents of a serious nature such as safeguarding, abuse, accidents, illness or falls.
  • Use your initiative and inform your line manger if you think a route can be altered to improve efficiency and the service provided.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns to the MCT Team Leader
  • Maintain the inside and outside of vehicles allocated in a clean and tidy condition.
  • To wear the Personal Protective clothing at all times in line with Health and Safety regulations.
  • Responsibility of receiving and safe handling of cash payments
  • To participate in relevant training and medical screening as requested.
  • To participate in flexible working arrangements.
  • To contribute to the overall quality of the service by working closely with other members of the team, helping promote good practice.
  • To work at all times in accordance with the County Council Policies and Procedures
  • To maintain confidentiality and observe data protection rules and associated guidelines.
  • To ensure clients feel welcomed, safe and protected on all journeys
