Job Description

Job Purpose

To undertake multiple aspects of manual and driving work for full range of Streetscene services as part of a self-regulated and self-managed team.

Services broadly include highway maintenance, waste and recycling collection/ disposal, cleansing, street lighting, winter maintenance and grounds maintenance.

Influence and motivate other Streetscene operatives within the team carrying out the duties, ensuring the work is carried out safely and within the standards expected for the service.

Principal Accountabilities

The postholder will be expected to carry out manual tasks, specialist driving duties and the operation of complicated heavy plant, vehicles and equipment, under the instruction of a Streetscene Supervisor for any of the service areas to which they have been allocated. The postholder will be expected to carry out general operational duties in all areas to meet the service needs including but not limited to:

  • Highway maintenance works both reactive and planned including pot hole repairs, tarmacing, kerbing, traffic management, pipe laying and slurry sealing
  • Waste and recycling collection/ disposal operations including loading of household/ trade waste (wheel bins, recycling sacks etc) onto designated waste vehicles, working on permitted waste sites and Recycling parks
  • Cleansing works of the highway and other Council owned land including litter picking, sweeping and dog fouling cleansing
  • Street lighting civil engineering works including excavation, laying ducts and cables, removal and erection of street lighting columns
  • Winter maintenance
  • Construction works including drainage works and carriageway construction
  • Grounds maintenance works including maintenance of grassed areas, pruning and maintenance of hedge/ tree/ shrub and weed spraying
  • Specialist, precision driving duties of heavy plant, equipment and vehicles in any service area
