Job Description

Applications are invited for a temporary, 12 months maternity cover, Lectureship in Ornithology in the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences. The successful candidate will be a motivated Lecturer (Teaching and Scholarship) who will contribute to ornithology teaching at undergraduate level. The successful candidate will join an active and enthusiastic group of ornithologists, and a dynamic T&S team passionate about quality teaching and pastoral support.

Applicants should have a PhD (or near to completion) in an ornithology-related area and have an enthusiasm for teaching and enhancing the student experience. We particularly welcome candidates working in the areas of physiology, locomotion, ecology, and biodiversity. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake teaching in classroom, laboratory and field settings.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Applications will also be considered to carry out this role on a part-time or job share basis.

The successful candidate will be expected to commence in January 2025 and the post is available for 12 months as maternity cover.

Purpose of the Job

This temporary Lecturer in Ornithology (Teaching and Scholarship) role will cover a member of staff who will be on maternity leave. The modules the candidate will be expected to cover are Introduction to Ornithology and Advances in Ornithology. Advances in Ornithology can provide the successful candidate with the scope to introduce their own interests and expertise. We are looking for someone who can get up to speed quickly and contribute enthusiastically and flexibly to undergraduate teaching.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Deliver lectures and two practicals for Introduction to Ornithology. This is a 20-credit module running in Semester 2.
  • Deliver seminars and help with field trips for the year 3 module Advances in Ornithology across Semesters 1 and 2.
  • Act as pastoral and academic tutor to undergraduate students.
  • Supervise final year dissertation projects on topics related to ornithology and functional morphology.
  • Contribute to and manage academic assessments for field courses, both based locally and in the South of Spain in Semester 2.
  • Contribute to the development, delivery, and quality assurance of the undergraduate curricula.
  • Maintain an excellent standard of teaching as indicated by peer observation, quality assessment, student feedback etc.
  • Undertake assessment and provide feedback to students as required.
  • Work collaboratively, sharing good practice with colleagues within the School and the College more widely, as appropriate.

Management and Administration

  • Develop and co-ordinate modules and programmes as required.
  • Maintain an up-to-date record of job performance and activities and to participate in the performance review process.
  • Attend all relevant board and examination meetings.
  • Carry out other teaching, management/administrative duties as specified by the Head of School.
