Job Description

Blue Peris Mountain Centre is looking to recruit two Outdoor Education Instructors, on 0.8 permanent basis with a starting date of February 3rd 2025

The centre is a 70-bed outdoor education residential centre, situated in the heart of Snowdonia. On the doorstep are magnificent mountains, tranquil lakes, and a stunning coastline. The centre mainly caters for school pupils who stay at the centre on a residential basis. However, customers do include universities, families, youth groups, scouts, cadets and corporate teams. Blue Peris has been, a safe and reputable outdoor education centre for nearly 40 years. Our teams are skilled and knowledgeable; dedicated to providing a potential life-enhancing experience to all our guests. Programmes are planned and suited to each groups’ and individual needs to give the opportunity to link outdoor experiences to pupil development to enrichment

You Will Have Experience / Qualifications / Training:

  • Ideally a minimum of three years' experience as outdoor education instructor/tutor/teacher

You Will Hold All Of The Following Qualifications

  • Mountain Leader Award (Summer)
  • Minimum of either - BCU L2 canoe / UKCC Level 2 coach / BC Paddlesports instructor pre 2019 / BCAB coach award (sheltered water)
  • RCI / SPA
  • Current 16 hour first aid certificate
  • Driving licence that permits the driving of minibuses of up to 17 seats (or will hold this upon start date of the role commencing)
  • Delivering Gorge scrambling and canoe sessions (on lakes)

Very Desirable:

  • Local mine leader
  • Vertical Leader or have completed training with a view to complete assessment by end of 2025 and be able to deliver in a the North Wales venues
  • Endorsement to tow trailers
  • Already established and delivering coasteering and roped sea level traversing , ideally at North Wales venues
  • Delivering kayaking sessions (lake based)

Main Role:

  • To deliver programmes that motivate and challenge young people, enabling them to experience success, both as individuals and as part of a team, thereby raising self-esteem and personal confidence.
  • To take responsibility, within the organisation of the centre, for specific areas of work or activities by negotiation with the centre managers
  • To take part in the staff development programme of the centre.
  • To publicise and promote the work of the centre, wherever possible
  • Oversee areas of compliance as required by centre managers

Skills / Knowledge:

  • An awareness of recent developments in outdoor education
  • Skills in a wide range of outdoor activities and experience of leading novice groups in canoeing, rock climbing, gorge scrambling and mountain walking with a higher level of personal skill and expertise in specific activities.
  • Ability to make and sustain effective relationships with young people and adults.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • To take on responsibility and act as course director when required.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to address various age ranges

Work Related Circumstances:

  • A willingness to take on responsibility and promote the further development of the centre.
  • A willingness to participate in weekend working (an average one weekend per month, summer season may see this being 2 per month)
  • A willingness to be on duty and on call overnight as required by the programme
  • Willingness to consent to and apply for an Enhanced Criminal Record Bureau disclosure check.
  • To have full regard for safety and good practice in all aspects of the Centre’s activities and adhere to the working procedures.

Working Hours:

  • Salary is based on 39 hours per week, but based on a flexible working rota to suit needs of programme and bookings each year
  • Evening duties range from mainly 8pm at times till 9pm / 10pm
  • Some morning duties from 7.30am
  • Main programme hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm (excluding duties, non residential and specialist courses)
