We have two exciting opportunities to lead and develop the research function of a new Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) within the Council. The HDRC will boost research capacity across the Council and embed a culture of always using evidence when making decisions. The Council has secured 5 year funding from the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) to establish this new and innovative collaboration, that will carry out research to identify how the Council can improve community health and reduce health inequality.

These are exciting new roles for the Council, where you will lead research teams to oversee and carry out research on priority topics related to the wider determinants of health. We are looking for two experienced researchers who will lead on the development and implementation of the HDRC research strategy and develop a research culture across the Council.

Working with the Programme Manager and Head of HDRC, you will take a lead on applying for grant funding to further meet the research objectives of the HDRC, and therefore have experience writing and managing research funding applications.

The HDRC will be working with teams across the Council, University of South Wales, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB), third sector partners and the community, and therefore you will need excellent partnership working skills and have the ability to build successful relationships.

You will be responsible for the line management of the teams Research Fellow and other research staff and therefore need to demonstrate robust management, leadership and interpersonal skills.

This is a great opportunity for you to be part of a new research collaborative and to contribute towards making a difference to citizens in Torfaen. If you are passionate about making a difference and have the skills and experience we are looking for, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.

We offer flexible working, family friendly policies, a generous pension scheme and generous holiday entitlement.

Torfaen County Borough Council
Company Information

Torfaen County Borough Council is the governing body for Torfaen, one of the Principal Areas of Wales.
The borough council was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 as a lower-tier district council with borough status. Gwent County Council provided county-level services for the area. The county council was abolished in 1996 and Torfaen became a principal area with county borough status, with the council taking over the functions previously performed by the county council.

Borough status allows Torfaen to give the chair of the council the title of mayor. However, the council discontinued the role of mayor in 2018. A presiding member role has been created instead to chair meetings.
