Job Description

This is a great opportunity for someone with a good work ethic who would enjoy being part of a team, working a varied role outdoors. Please note this is a part-time position.

Purpose Of The Role:

To carry out a wide range of general grounds maintenance, horticultural and gardening tasks to maintain and improve the standards of all open spaces and functions under the remit of the Council.

Main Responsibilities and Key Tasks:

Operational Tasks General:

  • To drive and operate all vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner, and in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations and with due regards to Health & Safety and Safe Systems of work;
  • To assist with performing and recording all required safety checks on all vehicles, plant and machinery in use by the grounds maintenance team; 

Cemetery:

  • To ensure the cemetery grounds are kept clear of litter;
  • As part of a rota of all grounds staff, to undertake a once weekly full clean of the Council-owned public toilets and a daily check to top up supplies and clean if needed;
  • To ensure all paths and roads are kept clear of cut grass and autumn leaves;
  • To undertake horticultural maintenance duties including but not limited to: Grass cutting using a range of pedestrian and ride-on equipment, Flowerbed maintenance, Shrub planting, pruning and weeding, Hedge cutting, Strimming, Tree planting and pruning, Weed maintenance and control;
  • To assist with the maintenance of a suitable method of composting of appropriate materials on-site;
  • To assist with keeping paths clear of snow and gritting in advance of night time temperatures falling below zero;
  • To assist with the locking and unlocking of cemetery buildings and gates;
  • To assist with gravedigging and other functions pertaining to burial services such as traffic management during periods of high demand, as spare capacity permits. 

Off-site:

  • To assist with carrying out minor repairs;
  • To plant, install, remove, maintain and water floral displays and hanging baskets belonging to the Council;
  • To carry out the regular cleaning of Council-owned bus shelters including the removal of moss / algae;
  • To undertake hedge cutting along footpaths.

Personal Management:

  • To be responsible for ensuring personal health and safety;
  • To maintain personal professional and technical competence;
  • To maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutory requirements and other regulations, including best practice, relating to Health & Safety;
  • To participate in the Council’s appraisal system;
  • To participate in training programmes and attend courses as required.

General:

  • To ensure the Council’s Equal Opportunities policies are followed;
  • To ensure personal compliance with the Data Protection Act and GDPR, and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;
  • To assist in maintaining good internal and external relations and promote the Council’s reputation;
  • To work in a sustainable and ethical way and to spend public funds wisely.
  • To undertake such other responsibilities and functions as may be required from time to time, commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of the post.

Hours: 16 hours / week

Salary: £13.06 per hour (£25,119 pa pro-rata)

Benefits: Generous pension scheme, 25 days’ leave per annum
