Job Description

This is a great opportunity for someone with horticultural & strong supervisory experience, looking for a varied and responsible role. Please note this is a full-time position.

Purpose Of The Role:

To be responsible for the efficient and cost-effective supervision of all Council employees engaged directly in the Council’s burial and ground maintenance services.

To oversee and carry out a wide range of general grounds maintenance, horticultural and gardening tasks to maintain and improve the standards of all open spaces and functions under the remit of the Council.

Main Responsibilities and Key Tasks:

Supervisory / Management Function (17 hours / week = 45%)

Management Role:

  • To play an active part in the management team;
  • To contribute to strategic planning, supporting the Clerk to achieve the Council’s aims and ambitions;
  • To oversee operational planning to ensure the Council’s objectives are met through the efficient and effective use of operational resources.

People Management:

  • To directly supervise the Grounds Maintenance team;
  • To oversee the work of the Burials team;
  • To manage staff productivity through task setting and achievement;
  • To provide one-on-one supervision when required;
  • To develop support plans for staff covered under the Equality Act 2010;
  • To monitor timekeeping;
  • To ensure adherence to the Council’s Health & Safety policies;
  • To develop operational staff training plans. 

Asset Management:

  • To oversee the correct use of all tools, equipment and machinery;
  • To arrange for the appropriate maintenance and servicing of equipment and machinery;
  • To manage and maintain equipment and asset maintenance records and report maintenance issues to the Clerk, keeping logs of defects and monitoring works completed;
  • To ensure the safekeeping of all Council assets.

Health & Safety:

  • To prepare all operational Risk Assessments;
  • To take day-to-day responsibility for the implementation of operational Health & Safety policies and procedures;
  • To be responsible for completing stage 1 investigations of all RIDDOR accidents and incidents;
  • To ensure all staff are aware of the Health & Safety regulations and Risk Assessments, and that they use the appropriate PPE at all times.

Biodiversity:

  • Together with the Clerk, contribute to and manage a biodiversity improvement programme including the appropriate maintenance of SSSI land falling within the Council’s remit;
  • To assist with the development of eco-projects and contribute to the sourcing of funding.

Hours: 37 hours / week
