This is an exciting opportunity for a Solicitor, Barrister or CILEX equivalent qualified lawyer to become part of a small friendly and committed team of in house legal experts primarily covering property, planning and highways law, including residential and commercial conveyancing.

You will undertake residential and commercial conveyancing from start to finish and deal with other property issues including adverse possessions and boundary disputes. Experience in other relevant areas of law that the team undertake would also be helpful. You will be working as part of a team that is integral to meeting the legal needs of the Council.

Experience working within a Local Government legal environment would be beneficial, however training and development opportunities will be available making the role suitable for someone motivated to start a career in Local Government. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be proficient in utilising legal case management software and other IT systems. You will have excellent attention to detail and the ability to draft and advise on complex legal documents. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential as is effective time management and organisational abilities. Welsh speaking and writing skills are desirable.

Job Purpose:

To provide legal services to the Council in the relevant legal field including advice, advocacy and drafting.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • To provide Council officers of all levels and councillors with accurate, up to date and correct advice on relevant areas of the law including case law, ombudsman’s / regulator’s decisions, codes of practice etc.
  • To provide advocacy at courts and tribunals and inquiries as required or to instruct counsel where appropriate.
  • Drafting and preparation of complex legal documents, contracts, agreements etc.
  • To be the specialist advisor in respect of at least one area of law (e.g. prosecutions/civil litigation, public protection and environmental law, planning, contracts, housing, landlord and tenant, information law, commercial property transactions, public rights of way and highways, employment) and to provide general advice/services in respect of at least one other field of law
  • To provide client departments with information and training, including arranging and attending legal surgeries to meet their needs, on relevant developments within their specialist field of law
